Created Creatures

Created Creatures reimagines the tradition of taxidermy via the medium of newsprint
The collection invites viewers to consider the kind of shared eco-system that might give rise to the diverse physiognomy, diets and temperaments of these fantastical animals, while at the same time critiquing the problematic practices of some crypto-zoological taxidermy, which employs elements of endangered species in the pursuit of novel creations.
Expanding beyond the traditional artist-viewer dynamic, Created Creatures introduces an adoption process where individuals interested in bringing a creature home must first complete an adoption form, encouraging thoughtful reflection on the suitability of the “ecosystem” of their home to the unique needs of a given creature. This participatory element underscores the collection’s message about the interconnectedness of living systems, real or imagined, and challenges viewers to approach art ownership with a sense of stewardship.
